Insuring Tasmania’s Tourism Industry

Growing the financial contribution of visitors to the state is a priority of the current 2030 Tasmanian Visitor Economy Strategy. Ensuring the health and wellbeing of businesses delivering Tasmania’s visitor experience is critical to maintaining and growing the industry’s annual $4.5 billion contribution to the state. However the cost and availability of insurance is increasingly becoming a challenge for tourism operators, hindering forward planning, innovation and overall business confidence.

episteme, with support from Professor Paula Jarzabkowski from the University of Queensland, has been commissioned by the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT), supported by the Tasmanian State Government to capture concerns that have been expressed throughout the industry about increasing premiums and the impacts they are having on the confidence of business and the delivery of products.

The findings of this report are derived from interviews and discussions held online and in person with a range of tourism operators, supported by an online survey completed by 109 Tasmanian tourism businesses who collectively host over 2.2 million visitors annually and employ up to 1,300 FTEs.
