Maximising the value of Mountain Biking Tourism to Tasmania’s economy

Mountain Biking tourism is an important driver of economic contribution in Tasmania, especially to small council areas such as Dorset and the Derwent Valley.

Episteme commissioned economist and passionate mountain biking guide Tim Harmsen with support from Nova Economics, to deliver an evaluation of the contribution Mountain Biking makes to Tasmania’s economy overall and by key Mountain biking region. Drawing on primary research of mountain biking visitors, trail managers, councils and local businesses as well as visitor data, the analysis is the most comprehensive evaluation of mountain biking tourism’s contribution currently in Australia.

The report is being used by the Mountain Biking Network and councils to advocate for funding for new trails, trail maintenance and supporting infrastructure, as well as marketing.
