Destination Perth destination management plan

Final DMP published

episteme was subcontracted by TRC Tourism to lead a team in the delivery of a suite of destination management plans for Destination Perth. The suite included an overarching 10-year Tourism Destination Management Plan, plans for each subregion, and three Regional Tourism Development Strategies covering the Perth metropolitan, Peel and Wheatbelt regions. It was a big job, and a great team made it a pleasure to lead.

Perth and Surrounds welcomes more than 5.1 million overnight visitors a year, and tourism is worth $3.5 billion to the region. The region stretches across seven subregions: Perth City, the Sunset Coast, Fremantle and Rottnest, the Swan Valley, the Perth Hills, the Avon Valley, and Peel and Rockingham. Each has its own character, from urban lifestyle and the Swan River to coastline, wildflowers, food and trails.

The plan sets a clear vision: Perth and Surrounds is “effortlessly Australian, the most relaxed and naturally adventurous capital city region in the world”. Shaped by extensive engagement with industry and government, it is guided by four principles: connectivity, sustainability, accessibility and collaboration. Its seven 10-year goals are to:

  • deliver a cohesive visitor experience

  • increase capacity and connectivity

  • grow and diversify accommodation

  • establish the region as a hub for world-class events

  • develop and showcase Aboriginal tourism

  • foster collaboration across the industry

  • strengthen the region’s positioning through shared marketing
