Insuring your business: a tourism operator toolkit

TICT Insurance Toolkit

Following our report on insuring Tasmania’s tourism industry, episteme worked with the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT) to turn its findings into practical support for operators.

Our research found operators facing rising premiums, shrinking availability for higher-risk sectors such as accommodation, agritourism and adventure, and gaps in insurance knowledge. The toolkit, developed in conversation with operators and insurance industry representatives, responds to those findings. It explains how insurance works and what drives premiums, including the costs outside an operator’s control.

At its core are six actions that could influence premiums:

  • choosing a specialist broker

  • involving the broker early

  • knowing your risks

  • building a documentation pack

  • right-sizing excesses

  • managing risk proactively

The toolkit provides guidance on workers’ compensation, public liability, and property and equipment cover. Throughout, it suggests questions operators can ask their broker or insurer. It is a living resource, which will be updated as operators and insurers share what works.

episteme delivered a series of workshops across key industry sectors in May 2026 to share the toolkit, in partnership with TICT.
